I have the pleasure of presenting the architect Caterina Scamardella today and discover with you some of his advice to furnish a trendy house. Read in the article what are the colors and style of the moment and how to customize your spaces without neglecting functionality.
Tell us about your professional path, who you are and what you like to do!
I graduated in 2003 and since the same year I started working, collaborating with various architecture studies, but my professional life has always followed two parallel paths that find a meeting point in a passion: the environment and environmental design , which is then the sector in which I graduated.
In fact, at the same time as the collaboration with the studies, I was a assignist at the Department of Configuration of the architecture of the University of Naples where I made insights in this field. From here I then met some engineering companies with which I provide engineering services for the environment and thanks to which I also pursued the qualification of technician competent in environmental acoustics.
At the same time I have always continued to follow the path of design for private homes and commercial activities, looking for sustainable proposals and attentive to the environment, well -being and comfort of end users.
What is the part of your work that stimulates you most?
The variety of challenges in front of which I am put every time, the need that from here arises not to stop at what you know, but on the contrary the push to discover and always deepen new topics. And, it is not a way of saying, but each customer is a new world that opens. This has its pros and cons, but it is still an opportunity to enrich itself.
In which interior projects are you specialized? Is there an environment in particular that you like to furnish the most?
I dealt with various types of interior projects, but the most frequent ones have concerned the residential so far.
The environments I prefer are entry and the living room: the first because it is often mistreated, but instead it is the starting point of everything, so it should represent well everything that comes later, having its own character, which is then the character of the inhabitants; The second because it is the most versatile space of the house, private for the relaxation and the meeting of the family, and the public for the welcome of the «others» and once again it must be a representative space of those who have to live in it.
Your favorite style?
A very essential and natural style, with the warm colors and the different shades of the wood, alternating with the light and bright ones. I could say a Nordic style, strengthened by the hardest lines of the Industrial and which sometimes winks at the past with some vintage note. I certainly don’t like the classic style and, more in vogue styles, I don’t particularly like jungle style, especially if exaggerated. Some calls are fine, but excess makes me turn up my nose.
How do you furnish a house according to the personality of its owners?
I listen to a lot, before putting the pen on the sheet. And I try to interpret also, because often those who are facing me know what they need, but do not know exactly what and how he wants it, so the architect at that point must be a little psychologist, a little the interpreter , to try to bring out everything you need to clarify ideas. The interpretation then becomes the meeting point between the customer’s needs and the architect’s style. If it is right, then valid projects come out.
What are the 2019/2020 trendy colors and styles?
After the green lawn of 2017, which I loved, and the 2019 Living Coral, which was not really my favorite, I think there will be another color inspired by ecological trends. The «faded coral» is already whispered. Colors and trends, and this is very pleased, they are all going towards the direction of the Green Economy, or rather, Blue Economy. We look at nature, natural or eco-friendly materials and recovery, and for this you also look a lot to the past.
How do you combine functionality and beauty in your projects?
Since the day I set foot at the university, I was put in front of the famous Vitruvian «triad»: functionality, solidity, beauty. We architects have been planned in a sense, so that these three parameters spoke between them. In fact, one inevitably was born on the other. When project I always try to create spaces that are functional, starting with distribution in plan and at the same time thinking them in a lift, up to the smaller detail. If something clashes against the criterion of functionality, it becomes unpleasant. An example? I hate the brushes alive. I find them non-functional and ugly. There are cases in which unfortunately you are forced to satisfy the customer and inevitably come out, but at that point, I feel that the project no longer belongs to me, deny his paternity.
